ROAD SAFETY

AVOIDING ROAD RAGE INCIDENTS

Of late we have been hearing stories about road bullies in Kuching. However, prior to this, the scenario was quite different where such incidences were somewhat synonym to more progressive cities like Kuala Lumpur.

Rage while on the road could be a nasty issue, which if left raging long enough could even spill over to a greater tragedy of revenge and many other untoward incidences.Having taken this into consideration, we would hereby like to put forth a few points of safety for all of us to ponder awhile.

ROAD SAFETY POINTERS
  1. Never travel on the right lane unless you are overtaking or driving fast enough not to cause a long jam behind you. This is the single most responsible act that causes road rage incidents.
  2. Signal before you turn or change lanes and do so well before you execute the turn. Give other road users a chance to realize what your intentions are. You're not the only driver other drivers are watching for!
  3. If you do make a driving gaffe and you really want to say you're sorry, a hand on the forehead and an expression of "I'm Sorry!" might help. If the person can see you, she/he may be able to read lips.
  4. Hang up and drive, don’t use the hand phone while driving unless you have a hand’s free.
  5. Trucks cannot react as fast as cars can, so don't cut in front of them and then slow down, especially not a gas truck.
  6. The same goes, when you pass someone, don't pass them and then slow down.
  7. If you're on a single lane road and your driving is causing a massive traffic jam, pull over and let traffic ahead of you.
  8. If you are driving your own car, meaning if you are not chauffer driven, please leave the morning newspaper at home. There are some amongst us who don’t believe in wasting time. Even at traffic lights they seem to flip their newspapers, so much so that they don’t even realize that the light has turned green. This is another opportunity to increase road rage among other road users.
  9. Finish your makeup, your hair, your shaving, etc in the bathroom, not in the driver's seat.
